The Vetsource Clinical Committee developed veterinary pharmacy courses that are free of charge to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of veterinary pharmacy. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can earn one credit hour for each course.
The committee, made up of Vetsource pharmacists and veterinarians, created the courses after seeing a need for veterinary-specific continuing education. “Such courses have become increasingly scarce,” says Mark Balyshev, Vetsource’s pharmacist manager and pharmacist in charge. “Historically, there have been limited resources available to pharmacists, pharmacy students, and pharmacy technicians, which led us to develop our own.”
The committee partnered with the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science to host and accredit the courses, launching the program in 2023 with two courses.
Current veterinary pharmacy courses include:
- Diabetes Management in Canines: Review information on understanding diabetes, recognizing signs and symptoms, how to administer insulin, managing diet and exercise, dealing with complications, and pet owner education and treatments.
- Management of Anxiety-Related Behavior in Canines: Learn how to assist pet owners in understanding and managing their pet’s health issues, which enables them to have more informed and efficient interactions with their veterinarian.
- Pain Management in Dogs: Discover the four types of pain categories, common risk factors, signs of pain, and pharmaceutical options for treatment.
- Treatment of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS): Learn about basic horse physiology, types of gastric ulcers, causes, treatment options, and dosing.
“We take pride in being pioneers in the industry,” Balyshev shares. “As we continue to expand our presence in the industry, we remain dedicated to maintaining our local outreach effort, as we have from the inception of Vetsource.”
